What to Expect From Your First Hypnotherapy Consultation
Hello, and welcome.
Whether we have already worked together or you are considering your first session, this newsletter is a place to explore familiar patterns with curiosity and find a practical next step.
Start with what matters to you
You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. I begin with questions: What would you like to experience differently? Why does that matter to you? What tends to happen just before you feel stuck?
Your answers guide our work. The words, images or feelings we use should connect with your own reasons for change, rather than someone else's idea of what you should want.
If we have already had a session
A session can open a conversation that continues in everyday life. You might begin to notice a familiar reaction, thought or habit more clearly. Sometimes that awareness feels encouraging. Sometimes it feels uncomfortable, or you notice yourself feeling anxious about the pattern.
My invitation is to notice gently, without watching yourself constantly or trying to force the pattern away. Ask: What was happening just before this? What matters to me here? What is one small response I would like to practice?
You do not have to solve everything in the moment. A brief note can be enough, then return your attention to what you are doing. Awareness can give you something specific to explore; it is not a test you need to pass.
Discomfort by itself does not tell us that a session is working, and you do not need to push through it. If anxiety is new, persistent or worsening, let me know and speak with an appropriate licensed health professional.
When a follow-up may be useful
People respond differently. You may feel satisfied after one session, or you may want more time with something that became clearer afterward. There is no requirement to book another session.
If you are noticing a pattern and would like to explore it further, we can use a free 15-minute call to discuss what has changed, what still feels difficult, and whether a follow-up session or another kind of support makes sense.
If this is your first conversation with me
The free consultation is a brief conversation about your goals, questions and possible next steps. You can ask about my approach, private sessions online or in Newport Beach, and the format and fee before deciding whether to book.
It is not a full hypnotherapy session. You do not need to prepare a detailed personal history or share anything you would rather keep private on an introductory call.
During a session, we agree on the focus together. My approach combines conversation, guided attention, imagery and reflection. You can ask questions, pause, or choose not to explore something. You do not need a particular spiritual belief.
One small thing to try
Choose a useful action small enough to begin now: open the document, put on your walking shoes, or spend five seconds starting. Ask yourself, “What makes this meaningful to me?” Choose a word or short phrase that reminds you of your own answer. Keep it simple and personal.
A note on the science
Research on hypnosis varies by the concern and the method studied. NCCIH reports promising findings in some areas and mixed or inconclusive evidence in others. That research does not establish that every approach works for every person, or that discomfort after a session is evidence of improvement.
For a grounded introduction, see NCCIH's overview of hypnosis and NHS Wales: what happens in hypnotherapy.
Watch: Dr. David Spiegel explains hypnosis
Dr. David Spiegel is a Stanford psychiatrist and hypnosis researcher whose work I follow closely. In this Huberman Lab conversation, he explains hypnosis as focused attention and discusses how clinical hypnosis differs from stage hypnosis.
Watch Dr. Spiegel explain what hypnosis is. The link starts at 0:20; the opening explanation runs for about two minutes. You can continue watching for a broader discussion of the research.
Let's talk about your next step
